But stay away. He requires all writing to be done under his draconian, unfair rules (no state of being verbs) so it takes 2 days and many f-bombs dropped to complete a short essay, to say nothing of a whole paper. And that's only if you've actually understood the assignment, which he is usually unclear about, especially when he gives you way too short notice to actually complete it. I actually have no idea what he wants out of his students, and I've tried to figure it out, and he has failed to shed any light on it. Emailed him while writing a paper asking him what the proper procedure for notations was, did not respond to me, then took off points when I got it wrong. My father, who went to YU, told me he avoided Lee in his day. Really teaches you how to write | | | 06/03/2009 | 1101 - Composition and Rhetoric I | | 3.2 | 3 | 4 | 1 | 5 | Yes | Let me also begin by echoing the fact that Prof. Lee is very knowledgeable and will offer his help in WRITING (I hope "right" was a joke...) in many many ways. But. When you sign up for his class, you are subjecting yourself to every rigor of writing. This includes, but is not limited to: disagreement, rejection, feelings of inadequacy, deadlines (which sometimes end up being frustratingly flexible if the whole class is lazy). He demands writing at an extremely high level (think of The Atlantic or higher magazines) for good grades. He will make you write a ton of revisions, focused on every little detail, until you are sick of the topic. Another issue is that his notes on your paper are very difficult to comprehend because of his unique handwriting style. I won't say that I did not learn a ton in his class, because it would be a lie. But I was unhappy with how I learned it and how unnecessarily difficult it was. And the s'char at the end may not match the tza'ar you put in. Just sayin'. The recommendation is al t'nai: for anyone who doesn't care about any of the above warnings, or thinks the rewards outweigh them.

Entertaining, knowlegable, funny, personable, and very capable of presenting the material in an interesting fashion. Now as for the class material, anyone entering should be aware that this class is 90% poetry (if you think this is fine with you look up T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land and think again). You will have to churn out 5 and 10 page papers of critically analyzed poetry including indicating what every comma and sylable indicates about the meaning of the poem. This may drive you insane. If you are fine with this, want to gain understanding of poetry, and are willing to do a decent amount of work, then I recommend this class.
