01/24/2017 | 1015 - Introduction to the Bible | | 4.5 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 5 | Yes | If you want to knock out Intro to Bible easily, take his course in IBC.
05/03/2013 | 3209 - Psalms | | 4.2 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 5 | Yes | This is not a blow-off class. There is homework every week, and a tough paper and final.
That said, you will actually learn things in this class, which some Yeshiva College students may forget is kind of the point of going to college.
Extremely knowledgeable, peppers his lectures with humor, and is a very nice guy. Highly recommend if you are serious about learning an academic approach to Tanakh.
12/30/2010 | 3209 - Psalms | | 4.2 | 4 | 5 | 3 | 5 | Yes | This was a really great class, usually small because he has a bad rep for being a tough grader but I think his points are legitimate. You should have a good knowledge of hebrew grammar to take this course. There will be weekly assignments parsing verbs and answering some questions he feels are helpful for that week. He assigns one 8-10 page paper which most people get at least a 30/ 35 and the assignments most people get close to 20s on. It is not an easy A but it is very manageable if you stay on top of the work and ask him questions about the paper. SUBMIT A DRAFT! The final questions were given to us beforehand so you have an opportunity to answer the questions before the test and organize your thoughts. It really helps to have paid attention in class in order to be able to support your points with proof from the psalms covered in class. In conclusion, HE IS A GOOD TEACHER, EXPECTS HIS STUDENTS TO COME PREPARED TO CLASS, REQUIRES TIMELY COMPLETION OF ASSIGNMENTS AND A REALLY ESSAY. TEST IS MANAGEABLE. TAKE IT AND MOST PEOPLE WILL GET AN A- TO AN A. [ 2/2 people found this rating helpful. ]
09/12/2010 | 2555 - Jeremiah | | 3.8 | 5 | 3 | 2 | 5 | Yes | i learnt a fortune, it is a really worthwhile course. understanding bible in its geopolitical context
05/25/2009 | 2555 - Jeremiah | | 4.5 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 5 | Yes | Professor Holtz is easily the best Bible teacher at YU. Listen, if you want a traditional learning of the Bible, take Angel or Orlian or something. If you want that plus cutting edge academic understanding (which is always helps you enhance your learning and appreciate the Nevi'im) this is the place for you. He and Prof. Koller are the best regular Bible professors, and I particularly recommend it if you just took Rabbis Bernstein or Wieder for intro as he may surpass them in regular text Bibles. Last, he has a great system for helping you write papers. Highly Recommended.

01/05/2008 | 1015 - Introduction to the Bible | | 3.2 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 4 | No | STAY AWAY! The quizzes, homeworks, midterm all count for NOTHING. Your final grade is exclusively dependent on the final exam. You better do well or you're in trouble.
12/25/2007 | 1015 - Introduction to the Bible | | 2.5 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 5 | No | Bottom line is this class is K'fira!! It is a very one-sided anti-jewish class that should not be offered in this school by Holtz unless the other side is taught as well [ 0/3 people found this rating helpful. ]
05/16/2007 | 1015 - Introduction to the Bible | | 3.2 | 4 | 3 | 1 | 5 | No | You can get an A. It will be tonns of work. Quizes every week. Must keep up wit h the readings otherwise you'll fail on the quiz and participation points. He's a very tough grader, won't give away anything for free. i heard he fails people. Many things he says are very controversial. nice guy outside of classroom. if you are willing to spend 3 days before the final exam day and night studying for intro to bible-take him. 05/12/2007 | 1015 - Introduction to the Bible | | 3.0 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 4 | No | Gives weekly readings and usually gives like 2-3 question quizes on the readings which is annoying as heck. the readings are boring and could be from 20-50 pgs. nice guy though.
